Markdown Monkey Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 11th, 2026

Markdown Monkey is a Markdown (.md) file viewer for macOS, developed by Stephen Folkes. This policy explains what information the app collects and how it's handled. In short: Markdown Monkey does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data.

No account required

Markdown Monkey does not require you to sign in or create an account, and has no concept of a user profile.

Information we collect

We don't collect any information about you or your usage of the app. Specifically, Markdown Monkey contains:

  • No analytics or usage tracking
  • No crash reporting sent to us or any third party
  • No advertising identifiers
  • No third-party SDKs

Local file access

Markdown Monkey runs inside Apple's App Sandbox and only ever accesses the specific files and folders you open or explicitly grant it access to (for example, via "Allow Access…" for a folder). It cannot browse or read anything else on your Mac.

Recently opened files and granted folder permissions are remembered using standard macOS mechanisms (security-scoped bookmarks and app preferences) stored only on your device. This information is never transmitted anywhere.

Network access

Markdown Monkey makes network requests in exactly one situation: if a Markdown document you open contains a link to a remote (web-hosted) image, and Settings ▸ Load images from the web is turned on, the app fetches that image directly from the host it's linked to - the same way a web browser would. That request will expose your IP address to the image's host, as any such request does.

You can turn this off entirely in Settings, in which case only local images load and the app makes no network requests at all.

Beyond this optional image loading, Markdown Monkey makes no other network connections - no telemetry, no update checks, no background traffic.

Data sharing

Because we don't collect any data, we have none to share, sell, or disclose to third parties.

Children's privacy

Markdown Monkey is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, regardless of age.

Changes to this policy

If Markdown Monkey's data practices ever change (for example, if a future version adds optional analytics), this policy will be updated and the effective date above will change accordingly.
