Holly HR
Holly HR is a comprehensive HR management platform built for small and medium-sized businesses. Designed as a single, unified workspace, Holly brings together employee records, time-off management, recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews, and payroll – eliminating the patchwork of spreadsheets, email threads, and disconnected tools that most growing businesses rely on.
The goal is simple: give business owners and HR managers everything they need to run people operations efficiently, without the complexity or cost of enterprise software.
Challenge
Small and medium businesses are underserved by the HR software market. Enterprise platforms are bloated and expensive, while lightweight tools often cover only one part of the HR puzzle – leaving teams to stitch together multiple systems and manually transfer data between them. The result is wasted time, human error, and a frustrating day-to-day experience for the very people who should be focused on their teams, not their tools.
The design challenge was equally significant: building a product from scratch that could handle the full breadth of HR workflows without becoming overwhelming. HR systems have a reputation for being slow, unintuitive, and cumbersome – the kind of software people dread opening.
Changing that perception meant rethinking not just the feature set, but the entire experience of using it.
Solution
Taking the product from zero to one, I led the end-to-end design of Holly (inc a new design system for fast iteration).
The guiding principle throughout was speed and efficiency.
HR tools shouldn’t be where you spend your day, so every design decision was made with that in mind: keyboard shortcuts, streamlined flows, minimal friction at every step.
Whether you’re approving a time-off request, adding a new team member, or reviewing an employee’s profile, the aim is always to get you in and out as quickly as possible.
Particular attention was paid to data portability – making it easy to import existing records from other systems when onboarding to Holly, and equally straightforward to export data should a business choose to move on in the future. Avoiding lock-in was a deliberate product and design decision, building trust with users from day one.
The interface supports both light and dark modes and scales gracefully from desktop to mobile, ensuring the product works for users however and wherever they need it.
Result
The platform covers the complete HR lifecycle – from hiring and onboarding through to payroll and performance – in a single, cohesive experience that prioritises usability above all else. Early internal reviews have validated the core design direction: a clean, fast, no-nonsense tool that respects the user’s time and doesn’t require training to navigate.
Holly HR is currently in pre-launch, with partner clients providing initial rounds of qualitative testing.
